FG Announces Six-Week Partial Closure of Lagos–Ibadan Expressway for Bridge Repairs.

According to Vanguard News on
February 6, 2026 , The Federal Government has confirmed a six-week partial closure of sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to allow urgent rehabilitation of expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge.

The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Works on Thursday, with officials stressing that the repairs are critical to road safety and long-term durability. Ogun State’s Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologized to motorists for the inconvenience and assured that traffic management strategies would be put in place to minimize disruption.

Komolafe explained that the expansion joints on the affected bridges had deteriorated significantly, contributing to accidents and posing safety risks. Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, directed immediate intervention to restore the structures.

Repairs have already been completed on portions of the Lagos-bound lanes of Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges. Work will now focus on the remaining sections, including the Ibadan-bound lanes.

Andy Duan, General Manager of CBC Construction Company, confirmed that equipment mobilization would be finalized over the weekend, with full construction beginning Monday. He noted that half of the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge has already been repaired, while the remaining portion will now be addressed.

“The Kara Bridge expansion joint is in very poor condition and has been linked to several accidents. This intervention is necessary to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow,” Duan stated.
