BUA Cement Plc has announced plans to invest $240 million in the construction of a new cement line at its Sokoto plant, aimed at boosting production capacity and strengthening its position in the Nigerian cement industry.
The new facility, which will produce three million tonnes of cement annually, is being developed in partnership with Chinese engineering and construction firm CBMI. Upon completion, BUA Cement’s total annual production capacity will rise to 20 million tonnes, consolidating its role as a leading player in Nigeria’s cement market and supporting West Africa’s infrastructure development.
The agreement builds on a 15-year partnership between BUA Cement and CBMI, during which the company has delivered projects amounting to 14 million tonnes of cement production capacity across BUA’s Obu plant and Sokoto factory.
Sokoto’s strategic location in Nigeria’s North-West, where BUA operates the region’s sole cement plant, provides the company with a strong base to serve domestic demand and supply landlocked neighbouring countries.
The project is also integrated with energy infrastructure. A 700-tonne-per-day mini LNG plant currently under construction in Kogi State is expected to provide clean and reliable energy to power the new Sokoto line as well as existing facilities.
BUA Cement said the expansion reflects its commitment to scaling production capacity, supporting investment opportunities in Nigeria, and adopting sustainable energy solutions to enhance operational efficiency while reducing carbon emissions.
